I don't know about a 96 Corolla specifically but it sounds like you might be trying to remove the plastic cover for the brake light. Don't. Usually when you pop the trunk you'll see some wires going to a plug behind the light. You turn that plug and pull the light out the back of the assembly. Just want to make sure you don't go through a lot of effort just to find out you missed out on the easy way.

Unscrew two bolts on outside inboard and one inside the trunk behind the light.Gently pry it loose.

Actually, to replace the light, you will need to take the entire fixture out; the wires you see going in from the trunk only connect to a 4-way splitter for the 4 bulbs in the tail light for this model. The 2 little black things do not need to be removed from the trunk. They are just anchors for a pair of prongs on the light fixture. Once the 2 screws and the nut have been removed, just pull the light out as straight away from the back of the car as possible. Some jimmy-ing is needed.
