The PS3 has what is called the Playstation Network(PSN) which is free to all users. This allows to create a friends list of other PS3 users and to send messages and files(not sure if there is a cap on the size of the file) to the people on your friends list. The only extra you will need to buy to use the PSN to its full potential is a headset. The PS3 accepts all bluetooth headsets so if you already have one for your mobile phone then this can be used, just follow the instructions in the PS3 and Headset manual to pair them. In the case of internet connection you can of course us a wired connection using the built in ethernet port. Or you can use wireless, a wireless adaptor is built into the PS3 so no need to buy one. The PSN also includes the Playstation Store where you download all the DLC for your games aswell as getting demos and trailers for upcoming games. There is also a selection of 'classic' PS1 games to buy. The currency is just your local currency (eg. £, $ or €) and not a 'points' system as used by Microsoft. As well as the PS Store there is the recent addition of PS Home which allows you to create your own personal avatar with which you can explore Home with. Home provides a place to meet other gamers and just chill out with games of pool or bowling. You can also invite other users back to your apartment where you can hold conference like events.
