  • Because they are jealous some times and other times they take one down rate too seriously and they think it is vendetta time. Other times they think they know it all in a certain subject, we'll say science, and anyone that posts something contrary to what the category expert snob thinks is correct, these people will Down Rate the other's account. Other times they will do it just out of spite since they don't like the person.
  • I like the term 'deindividuation'. Unfortunately you have trolls in real life too, but in real life you can just stop associating with them (unless they are related) easier than on a forum.
  • Interesting. Anonymity can have it's negative side. People hide under its blanket in order to behave against the norms, purposefully attack others etc. I liked these parts: "Social psychologists have known for decades that, if we reduce our sense of our own identity – a process called deindividuation – we are less likely to stick to social norms." "...If you insult someone online, it's unlikely you'll face any physical retaliation for it. Epley compares the resulting psychological distance to being isolated inside a car – another situation that seems to make people more prone to abusiveness."
