  • Led Zepplin pretty much defined the term Heavy Metal in the '70s. If the phrase has come to mean something different recently then that doesn't really change anything.
  • I think because at the time they were heavy metal. Hendrix was the first to be referred to as Heavy Metal but the name came to be used for Sabbath more than Zep. Also Whole Lotta Love with its incessant riff, echo laden sound and so on can be seen as a blueprint for metal sounds in the future. Music genres are such a fickle thing anyway. Zep are a particular case in point as they strode so many "genres" with ease, folk, funk, rock, blues etc etc. I think Miles Davis put it best: There are only two kinds of music. Good and Bad. :)
