    Actually, Windsor is not the family's original name. It was adopted during the First World War (specifically, by proclamation of King George V on 17 July, 1917) when the family renounced all German titles and Anglicanizing all German-sounding names. Previous to this, the British Royal Family used the surname Wettin (of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha).

    Also, by declaration of Queen Elizabeth II, the current official surname of the Royal Family is Mountbatten-Windsor.
