I don't know much about them specifically, but I have heard they can exacerbate breathing problems, such as asthma, emphysema, etc. Why risk it anyway? Consumer Reports has no interest in the product, but the manufacturer would.

I had one of the Sharper Image versions in my house for a while. It worked well enough and was quiet, but it got knocked over and blammo was busted. The ozone is bad enough that the parrot-owning community says don't use them. Last winter, when we put a new HVAC in the house, I opted for a mechanical filter without the ozone option... I tried to do research, got the same disconnected results as you have arrived at. I pulled out Occam's razor and said, "who's more likely to telling the truth - the manufacturer with a vested interest in selling them, or Consumer Reports..."

I purchased a Sharper image unit years ago and after the first night of use, I had a throbbing headache. That was very alarming because I rarely if ever get headaches. I took it back to the store and got a refund. I've never used one again. These people don't really know what this stuff is doing to us and we're the guinea pigs.

Ozone issues aside, they aren't very effective air filters.
