A verbal contract can be enforcable if it's judged that there was a meeting of the minds. In other words, you were both in aggreement as to what the terms were. Because those terms aren't in writing, though, actually getting it enforced can be very difficult. Whether or not the other party thinks a written contract is necessary, always demand one. If they refuse, you probably shouldn't be doing business with them.
