because it spins i think
-
Centrifugal force.

The earth spins on its axis, hence why we have days and nights and not just one long day followed by one long night (by long I mean 1/2 a year). This spin causes a bulking of the earth in the centre of the spin.
-
The earth is constantly being shaped by forces within and without ... just like we are.

The warm magma that formed the origin of the earth, is not a solid. The spinning actions of centrifugal force are creating a greater impact around the equator, "tossing" out the crust with more force than at the poles. Throw a water balloon and watch how it spins thru the air. You will notice the distortion in its shape as it rotates.
