Hmmm let me think about that.
-
I try to do so when I feel like I have something worthwhile to say, or something of valuable information. So if the question is on quantum physics I'm probably going to avoid it, as I will have no idea. If it is something that I have a thought on or some experience with I will absolutely answer to the best of my abilities.
-
Sure...But some of the questions on AB go over my head...

I just did! http://www.answerbag.co.uk/q_view/475941

Inane questions are easy to answer. Hard questions require insight and time to concoct an intelligent response. I try to answer some of the philosophical ones, but the academic ones are usually far over my head.
-
I like to mix intelligent questions and answers with some fun. I am a very serious and analytical person in life, and humour is one of my outlets to blow off steam. AB happens to be one of my vents, but when I ask or answer a serious question, you know it.
-
It's hard to notice it. I did an experiment where in the same hour I posed two questions. One was asking about a common mis-fact and one asking about something absurd. There was one response to the mis-fact. (Correct by the way) There were 34 responses to the absurd question. Far more points for the second question too.

I almost never notice such questions. I'm afraid that many questions are like "What color sock did you wear yesterday?" and "Did you eat an apple today?". I would love to see genuine thought-provoking questions more often, and would most likely at least attempt to answer them. It really depends on us users. The quality of this website relies on us.
-
I'll answer any question if it is within my capacity to do so, but I do realize that acting like a complete idiot can get you far more attention than acting smart. I think it's kind of unfair. I mean, I've asked some stupid questions, but at least I thought them out a little. Very few of them got a decent amount of answers. And then I see a question asking something like "Why'd you eat my turkey sandwich?" and everyone online at the time contributes an answer. But I don't want to complain...
-
Who are you to judge what intellectualism is? Who am I to judge? Who is anyone really? Can you really say intellectualism is dead, or is it simply hiding from the nazi flaggers?
-
No, I won't go the extra step and actually think to answer a question, that's why I answered this one.
-
I'm on AB to not have to think. I do that too much anyway.
-
If I know the answer or so choose to participate in a survey-like or trival question, I will do so. Answers are given out at the descretion of the individual giving them - we as humans cannot judge fairly what questions hold more value to the individual who has the human right to ask the question. Just like this question here.
-
I answer both fluff and serious questions, however, I prefer the serious ones. I like to give a little thought and a little time. I also do not get very many points or comments for the "deep" ones. I accept this because I enjoy the deeper ones.
-
just maybe people don't want to 'brain drain' maybe people want to have fun ...maybe some questions need 8 diplomas to understand what the f*ck they mean or are trying to ask...now just because some throw away questions get lots of answers doesn't mean there is a lack of intellectual minds here on AB ...far from it ..just means having a good time answering dumb asses questions with equally dumb asses answers which in turns create lots of laughs and good humour.. now thats far from being a bad thing now is it...

1) This question, at least, did not stay unnoticed. 2) I know what you mean. But who is answering the questions? Is is not all of us? 3) Maybe there is something rotten in the kingdom of Denmark...
-
You are very right Super Chicken, in a way though its just another reflection on how human nature will mostly prompt us to take the 'easy' route isn't it? Small motivators such as the points system will inevitably result in this disparity. Personally it depends on my mood at the time. Sometimes I just read the answers given to the more serious questions and 'award' the individuals for taking the time to give a thoughtfull answer with points.
-
that's very true...I have noticed it as well.
-
Aye.. indeed and I do.
-
Most of the time "intellectual" questions just annoy me. Mainly because I get the feeling that the person asking it already knows/thinks they know the answer, and just wants to see what people will say. I'd rather give useful opinions and/or advice to people who actually need it.
-
I assume you are talking about the kind of question that will have a variety of viewpoints that are thought-provoking and will lead to a stimulating debate..pro and con. How about this...why don't you ask one that you think fits that bill and I'll give you my opinion, providing it is something that I would find interesting. One man's "intellectual" is another man's "show-off". I think many many questions have been asked that stimulate one's brain and activitate thought processes. If you hang out on the main page all the time you get a lot of senseless inane drivel..try hanging out in other realms..you may be surprised at what you find there. :)

I answer any questions that I like. I like some intellectual questions. I also like some completely silly and inane questions. AB is for both of them. The first, good for thinking. The second, good for having fun.
-
True, questions that need thought or research certainly do not get the interest that conversational questions receive. Since I do not have the imagination for the conversational type of question I ask questions that require factual answers. I like to research and there are some people that do work very hard to answer with lots of imformation. That makes it worthwhile.
-
Like others have answered before me, I like to mix it up. I participate in silly but witty questions, I'm guilty of asking some of them myself. Some have worked, some have not. But I support the idea of learning something new and useful and to help others if it's within my ability. Conversational, humoruous type questions are by far the most popular here. I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.
-
I try to ask intellectual, and thought provoking questions, but those rarely ever get action. My most recent question was (my idea) of a thought provoking question, and I only received one answer. I enjoy the silly questions, and the intellectual questions.
-
Yes, occasionally I go rummaging through the obscure science categories.
-
I pretty much try to only answer intellectual questinos but i get there too sometimes
-
Not if it means that I will turn into a grumpy old fart like yourself.
