But instead of spelling it all out they put "we r drug free". are the teachers some of the problem too?

i think it shows that the kids have a connection with what they do. sure it's improper grammar and spelling, however thats not the point of Drug free week at all. the point is to get kids to connect with a major social issue which can be done by adapting things to their culture and slag, they have turned a negative into a positive. if texting is an issue in school it's not going to change their culture outside of school. for example im sure playing hand-held video games is not allowed during lesson, but outside of school nothing changes hand-held games could very well be the "hot-topic" of the day. im sure in 15-20 years your son will be saying near enough the same thing you are. as times change so has the was we connect with younger generations we can understand them more and adapt issues to be more compelling for them.

I think textng is bad, most kids can even spell common words and do not know the parts of sentence. I believe texting will only make it worse. Because I know some people will try to write papers like a big text message.

Well you are automatically assuming that mispelling "are" as "r" for "We r Drug Free" comes from texting, but I'm going to have to point out that its not necessarily from texting. Using short slang originally started on the computer, before texting arrived. And second of all, you're making an automatic assumption that texting changes the user's minds to start writing everything in short slang. I am only 16 years of age and I never shorten my words like just saying "u" or "y" or "r", I use proper grammer, and I text fairly often. Also, when they are spelling out "We r Drug Free", maybe they wouldn't have enough space for the whole word? Of course only you would know since you've seen it, so you could be the one to judge that statement. Writing essays like a text message? Only if they wish to fail the assignment. There's enough common sense to determine whether or not to use a formal style or a social style of writing. Not knowing different parts of a sentence has nothing to do with texting, that has to do with their behavior in the classroom. I completely agree that texting conversations that last centuries are pointless and a waste of money and time, but texting is very handy for quick messages to send to one or more people about things, rather than having to call up each person individually, you can just send out a mass text. I believe its pros far outweigh its cons.
