If you found yourself stuck (like Aron Ralston did) with one hand pinned beneath a boulder in some remote wilderness canyon and your only option for survival was to cut off your hand.. Would you or could you do it?

I don't know if I could do that. I think I'd be too much of a wimp to cut off my own hand. Or any part of my body. I just don't think I could bear the pain. Not to mention there's no gaurantee you wouldn't die of infection or bleeding to death before finding help.

Of course nobody knows until they're in that situation... I think I would do it, but what a horrific possibility to contemplate! What I appreciate about Ralston's story is that it didn't stop him from doing what he loves -- after going through all that trauma and severing his own arm, he was back up and hiking as soon as he recovered. Plus, he shares about his experience with a sense of humor, he is appropriately critical of his own poor judgment which led to the situation, and he doesn't exploit the "macho" aspect of his experience. Overall, I think his story is a great example of authentic courage.
