I respect a great many people for a variety of things. The only time i won't respect someone is when they hurt or disrespect someone else or disrespect me. Boiling it down to the simplest of terms, I show no respect for ignorance or attitude.

I've never been the type to 'look up' to someone, or have a 'hero'. Even when I was a kid and people would ask me that, I didn't know how to answer. However, I have finally met someone who I consider respectable. I just started my new job about two months ago, and there was this one guy in my 'class' who everyone just kind of made fun of... but not in the way you'd think. He didn't have a low self-esteem or anything, he was just extremely dorky and spent most of his time coming up with intelligent statements or joking/pranking in the goofiest way possible (stealing the trainer's marker when he left the room, but eventually giving it back, etc). So, at first we just all kind of joked about him. But then he became friends with my friend Donna, and she started bringing him to work everyday; I still didn't know much about him. Then he moved right near my house, and I offered to start bringing him to work. Then I got to know him. Joshua is a recovering morphine addict. He's been clean for about 6 months. Morphine destroyed his life; he got his wife pregnant and gave up his child, his wife left him, he became homeless, until finally he checked himself into rehab, then moved into the halfway house. He had just moved out of the halfway house when I started bringing him to work. He goes to either AA or NA meetings almost daily. He puts up with a lot of shit, but still keeps a very cheery and pleasant attitude most of the time. Not only that, but now that I've actually gotten to know him, and realized that most of the time when he's acting dorky he's doing it on purpose, the crazy stuff he does at work are absolutely hilarious. It taught me not to judge people on first impressions. The reason I respect him is because after all that he's been through he still has a great sense of humor, kept his sanity, and is one of the most awesome people I know. The photo is of me and him at a fair last month. It's kind of an inside joke, because he is the least gangster person I have ever met.

Self control, self examination, not stereotyping, trying to the best of a person's ability to do the honorable thing, and a willingness to listen to someone elses' opinion. Oh and a willingness to admit when you are wrong if you are wrong and a willingness to stand by your convictions if you believe you are right with all information given.
