The NBA free throw line is 4.5 metres or 15 feet from the backboard. However, it is 13 feet from the front of the rim.

15 feet from the backboard. This is standard for all basketball, although some very young children may play with a shorter line.
15 feet (from the floor directly underneath the backboard) to the FT line. why? just because it's most suitable way the game was designed.
