I know this to be true; So far, the best reference I can give you is from wikipedia, but I'll come back to this question with a better source... "no technical crew member will eat any of the same products as his colleague - this is to ensure that each pilot eats a completely different meal to the other so as to minimize the risk of all pilots on board taking ill." ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airline_meal

hell, they have to bring their own food now. I don't want any pilot hopped up on peanuts flying my plane.

The captain and first officer are requested, whenever possible, to consume a different entree. There are usually at least two menu choices on longer flights so this is rarely a problem. If in a big three class configured plane, the captain and first officer usually get a meal from the Business Class section or the First Class section. Meals are often based on a pilots contract, it all depends on the airline. Some airlines end up giving the pilot a mix of whatever is left over from all the meal service. Many pilots elect to bring their own food onto the plane. Pilots are allowed to bring their own food and beverages with them, but sometimes this poses a problem due to security restrictions. Apparently I am qualified enough to receive a 'same type' rating to fly any one of the multi-million dollar CRJ aircraft, but not trustworthy enough to take my own can of pop through security.
