  • i know a few people that really do
  • I used to when I was a kid, but my ex boss keeps them in her office to snack on. Raw, yes.
  • Eat one and then you tell me! Although some consider them a rare treat - (people do eat them raw), I find them much more palatable cooked.
  • You can eat raw potatoes. They don't taste great..and also potatoes are a member of the Solanacae which is a plant family known to have solanine (tomatoes, eggplant, deadly nightshade are in the same category). Solanine is not really very good to be eating it is a potentially toxic alkaloid. It tends to be at its highest concentration of any green parts of the potato --but not necessarily...In any case cooking a potato destroys the solanine. Is this more info than you ever wanted to know?
  • You know, if you hold your nose and take a bite, it's really hard to tell the difference between a potato and an apple. So it's not such a weird idea to eat a raw potato. HOwever when you cook a potato, notice how it gets soft instead of the hardness of a raw potato. Why does that happen? Because you have broken down the cellulose walls in them by the heat. This allows the starch to turn back into glucose when you eat them. They get digested. But when you eat them raw, those cell walls are still intact and you will not be able to break down the starch into glucose. The cellulose fibers in the cell walls would be intact, and the starches would be inaccessible to your amylase enzymes. They will just pass right on through. Same as raw carrots, actually.
  • I do. Not the whole potato, but when I'm chopping them up for fries, or mashed potatoes I will pop a couple of chunks into my mouth. They're good.
  • I do every now and then. Just needs a little salt.
  • *Blinks three times* Ewww! I can think of a few reasons!

  • Why eat one raw when you can cook em and they're so much better! (IMO anyways)
  • I think they taste wonderful. I love raw potatoes with salt sprinkled on them. If I'm making a pot of potatoes I have to have at least ONE whole one raw, maybe two!

  • I remember the days when I was a tot. When we would cut the potatoes for french fries, I'd eat them raw...but when cooked, oh, so good!
  • Did you know bannana peels are edible? I used to eat them with the bannana in high school I was so weird.
  • The reason some people don't eat raw potatoes is that their childhood influences left them with the strange notion that raw potatoes are somehow bad or unpalatable. The variety of comments on this page alone says it all. Some think they're delicious, some think they taste disgusting. But in truth, they're 100% free of cholesterol, chemicals, or transfats. They're truly a natural food, rich in minerals and other good things. They're a great thirst quencher. When they're cold, they're crisp and crunchy. They are not "tasteless" as some say. People in other cultures eat them all the time. You should never, however, eat the peels uncooked. The peels might also be natural, but they're poisonous when raw and would probably make you very sick.
  • I love to snack on a piece or two while I am cutting them up. Usually with a little salt sprinkled on them, but sometimes without.
  • I ADORE raw potatoes and raw sweet potatoes.. [better then a raw carrot..] It is REALLY healthy for you also, I dont even add salt, I eat whole ones like apples.. Enjoy!!!

  • Unlike other vegetables and fruits, Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a tuber. It is difficult to eat and digest raw tubers. It adds taste when they are cooked, baked or fried properly.
  • The secret of fire is no longer a secret.
  • Because they are not really edible in that state.
  • I love raw potatoes as well with a little salt but I also use them in a salad that I make. The moisture in them mixes with some of the herbs and seasoning that I use to form it's own dressing.
  • I love eating raw potatos. Umm, Umm... I peel them and rinse them, then I soak them in cold water in the fridge I slice them or cut them in chuncks. They get nice and crispy and taste so good. I eat the potato almost daily. raw, straight out of the cold water. I just can't get enough of them.
  • When I shop for potatoes, I look for ones that I could just bite on, right away. I prefer them raw, I think because of the texture and crunching sensation. They're very nice, and convenient too. A cooked potato is just crumbly, and bland.

  • When I was small, my mum used to make home made chips/fries and it was my job to put the raw potato through the 'chipper'. I would always munch away on a few whilst 'chipping'. To this day I still love raw potatoes. In fact, a lot of veggies are tastier in their raw state.
