It is easier to be romantic with the written word because you are not reacting to your surroundings. No body language, no expressions to influence your mood or thoughts. The hesitation is good because it means you can take the time to ponder every thought and feeling. When you "write" you are listening to your heart. When you are verbal you might react to distractions which at times can feel less than romantic.

Aunty Em is right - rehearsal is a big part of the power or writing. Why is a prepared speech so much more eloquent than if somebody had to get up impromptu and give an oration? Simply because when writing, we are able look upon our words, test them in our mind, refine them and polish them to make art.

Usually in writing we are able to 'idealise' as well. If it's fictional writing, we can write a scene that is more conducive to romance than some of our real life scenery.

As for love letters, since we are making the effort to write down something special like that, a lot of effort and thought is usually put into it, and we are often more reflective. Also, because love letters are often written alone or away from the person, there is no pressure to stifle the 'romantic' inspiration that makes a love letter.
