Interesting. But I know plenty of good songs that don't mention alcohol or drug use. Do you perhaps have a link to the list of songs?

Considering that most popular songs (I assume) would target teen and early adult music consumers then it wouldn't surprise me if this were true. There is still the "cool" aspect of drinking and drug experimentation among the young and it is often seen in many cultures as a right of passage to adulthood so popular music does tend to target right of passage lyric content in order to make the consumer connection.
