  • Probably not. The gas tank has to be vented. Newer cars use an evaporative emmisions control system. Simply put, they pull fumes from the tank into the intake of the engine. Older cars had the fuel tanks vented to the atmosphere. I don't know which the 77 Vette uses. In either case you may have a vent hose that has come loose or deteriorated with time and is leaking fumes. Some older systems used a vented gas cap.
  • Hi, I too have a 77 vette and was plagued with the same problem. There is an evaporative charcoal cannister, that is very hard to find, near the side of the car, close to the brake booster, but mounted near the front tire well. The line goes to this cannister from the bottom of the carb. I have an L-48 engine with Rochester carb. Anyway, this line was completely deteriorated. I replaced the line, and the fumes have vanished. Let me know if this advice helps...
