Plato is HUGELY important! He was Socrates pupil and is important for that fact alone as he recorded Socrates teachings. He wrote a series of dialogues and you can almost see the early dialogues are Socrates speaking, the middle are Plato developing his own thoughts more powerfully and the later ones you can almost hear another voice appearing which is Plato's pupil: Aristotle. He also founded the famous Academy in Athens. I cannot detail Plato's contributions here, they are FAR too extensive. He is a wonderful author and in my opinion the best philosophical author until Nietzsche. His influence on western philosophy is almost incalculable.
