In my chosen field, civil engineering, I've found it better to work for smaller firms. In the big ones, you get pigeon-holed into an arcane specialty too easily. A new engineer at MegaFirm, Inc. could easily find himself spending the next 4 years doing nothing but designing sidewalks. That is a good skill to know, but after about 2 months, you've run out of new things to learn in the sidewalk game. Smaller firms require their engineers to know more about a broader range of subjects.
