  • People have checked how much of the money given to charities actually gets there. For the major charities it is actually quite good - round about the 95% mark for the biggest, such as Oxfam, Save The Children etc. For smaller ones it was not bad, and for some small, sport-related ones it was very bad. But if you give to the major, internationally known, charities your money usually goes to the right place. Alternatively, little local charities you can check yourself. The problems are small charities operating nationally - nobody is really keeping an eye on them.
  • I would definitely want to be directly involved with my acts of charity. If I were to give resources to any person or group, I would try to give them something that can help them in the future. Examples being paying someone's tuition, helping to create community gardens, helping communities with healthcare, etc. I have given to charities in the past, but would rather be physically involved in the future.
  • Da Ben Dan, you're not normally this cynical. Personally, I give to the causes I feel are the neediest and ones I'm sure are doing a good job. Oxfam is a great organization. Believe it or not, but often times churches have causes you can donate to and 100% of the proceeds go directly to the end user.
  • Just do this instead...it doesn't cost you anything but time: http://www.freerice.com/
  • Most times, the only thing I can contribute is my personal time. This saves any confusion. I see the results on the faces of those I help.
  • IF you live your life always thinking about the negative things--you will miss many of the good positive things. If you are really worried about money and or services NOT getting to the proper people you could take a positive proactive approach and inquire at some of the public agencys that trace these actions. Most states have what is called a consumer service which is set up in the Attorney Generals Offices of that state. The services are free either by mail or some are now on-line. (The consumer divisions track anything that is dishonest or fraud). I have used them for years with good success. take care
  • I often wonder... it is the reason why I never give money to one particular charity, despite the fact that I think it is a great one in its aims. This is a good site I found recently - http://www.guidestar.org.uk/ It helps you work out how your money will be spent. It is a British site, but it does include international charities and perhaps there is an American equivalent for those outside of the UK.
