Can you be called an otaku if you have 50 some manga that you like to read? Or is that reserved for someone who is a little more of a fanatic...?

Originally, the word referred only to fanatics, like kinda scary fanatics. But more recently the word has come to a wider use and also refers to mere enthusiasts, or people who just really like something. You can call yourself otaku if you want, but you don't have to.

Well, I've never been called an otaku before. In Japan, the word isn't actually used that often, it's usually Western anime-lovers who use that word. Besides, because I'm Japanese (well, half-Japanese), most Western people see me as "OK to like anime a lot" and wouldn't say it's unnatural for me to like anime...if you get what I mean.
