  • Originally, the word referred only to fanatics, like kinda scary fanatics. But more recently the word has come to a wider use and also refers to mere enthusiasts, or people who just really like something. You can call yourself otaku if you want, but you don't have to.
  • Well, I've never been called an otaku before. In Japan, the word isn't actually used that often, it's usually Western anime-lovers who use that word. Besides, because I'm Japanese (well, half-Japanese), most Western people see me as "OK to like anime a lot" and wouldn't say it's unnatural for me to like anime...if you get what I mean.
