Both the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts are addressed to someone named Theophilus (http://scriptures.lds.org/en/luke/1/3 and http://scriptures.lds.org/en/acts/1/1). In the case of Acts, the author refers to an earlier letter in which he discussed "all that Jesus began both to do and teach,..." This is a pretty clear reference to the Gospel. So, it has been concluded that both books were written by Luke.

Luke Chapter 1:1-3 and Acts 1:1. Dear Friend who loves God:"most excellant Theophilus"

Throughout the Book of Acts there are certain sections called the "we" sections (16:10ff; 20-21; 27). This would obviously mean that the author accompanied those he was writing about. Paul wrote many of his letters while on his missionary journeys and in them he refers to those who were with him and he mentions Luke (Col. 4:14; Philemon 1:24; 2 Tim. 4:11). Along with other comparisons that we see in the Gospel according to Luke that others have already pointed out, Luke is held as the traditional author of the Book of Acts.
