... either hack the main server and count them, or try posting a question that asks everyone to just post an answer to a 'census' question ... although the system knows, as a user, this info is not usually readily available ... __________ ... a valid suggestion for future changes to this site might be to post a "total users online NOW" ... with an "online / offline" flag beside all of your 'friends'.

i think it would be good to know that way you could determine the best times to post a question to get the best possible response.
