I personally think of God more as an ever-present, all-linking energy. Freud was interested in how children's attitudes toward and assumptions about parents become, by means of projection, the basis for ideas and feelings about 'gods' as all powerful parental figures. Projection is important in the formation of political ideology, especially when religious in nature, and such projected ideological ideas often become hegemonic.
