We didn't send any large groups of infantry. But what we did do is send advisors (CIA operatives) down to aid the resistence forces. It just so happens that Al Qaeda was part of the defending forces.

This is quite ironic actually, the United States actually trained, funded and armed Al Qaeda. Without these acquired skills, Al Qaeda would never have been able to attack New York on September 11!

Trained, funded, gave them everything they needed. Good movie would be to watch Charly Wilsons War, not exactly the most educational, but gives the general idea.
