What is the most basic reason for an otherwise honest person turning to crime?

Maybe the temptations of easily attainable, (but not honest) money.

Desperation...Wanting something so badly you would do anything to get what you want...

Let's say I'm the honest guy. I try my hardest to do right by everybody, and make sure everything I do is to the highest moral standard. I work hard, make a decent living, but have a hard time making ends meet. On the other hand, my neighbor is a jerk, cheats his way through life, takes advantage of everybody, and has tons of [material goods]. At some point, I think some honest people would crack as the temptation to achieve the same success as their neighbor becomes overbearing.

Then, could they truly be called "Honest". I think the definition of honest would not include criminal acts. I think the excuse could be desparation, but the reason is still weakness.

Hi Steelhampster, I guess I forgot one more reason that might turn a person. That is the loss of hope, Thankfully I have never lost that. I do have children and I have been in desperate situations, but the thought of going to jail was never in my plans, so I did everything else I could to get through. With my head up, And my childrens respect! There is always a way, if we look hard enough. Thank You

I would suspect being thrown into unemployment thru no fault of your own and having to care for a family, or drug experimentation gone bad.

not that I would of course - but having been let donw by the law and the enforcers of this supposed justice Seeming as though they faviour the wrongdoer, in turn leading to a severe lack of faith in them

I would say it is money. Or, lack of... Crazy things can run through someones mind when they are hungry, or about to lose their home, etc. ...Turning to crime can seem real easy, and a quick fix to any problem. I'm sure love could be an alternative reason, possibly just as common...
