Anonymous --- you have discovered why it pays to understand and diagnose a system, rather than just throwing parts at it. The neutral safety switch (I'm assuming your Escort has an automatic transmission) is designed to prevent electrical power from getting to the starter UNLESS the car is in "PARK" or "NEUTRAL". If the switch fails, it can prevent the car from starting. The switch is usually mounted on or near the gear selector lever. *Sometimes* you can diagnose its failure/maladjustment by trying to start the car in the wrong gear and/or 'jiggling' the gear lever in "PARK" or "Neutral" while attempting to start the car. Here's a wiring diagram that shows how the system works (although it doesn't give the switch location) http://www1.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/13/c8/c5/0900823d8013c8c5/repairInfoPages.htm (Click on "Figure 10") Good luck.
