  • A couple of possible reasons. One is that it's (not necessarily correctly)associated with cold weather, and getting cold, and thus it is the "cold" that you caught. This association is reinforced by the fact that you start out feeling cold (or chilled), as your body is raising its temperature. You feel hot and sweaty later, when your body decides it's time to bring your temperature back down.
  • I think that in the early years, people had a tendency to descibe a disease by the symptoms displayed. When you are sick and feverish, you wrap yourself in a blanket, you shiver extensively and you complain that the room is too cold. All of your symptomology can be explained as if you were out in the snow too long, and so you caught a "Cold."
  • The phrase "cold" was coined because people are more prone to catch colds in colder weather ... you supposedly catch THE cold, not A cold.
  • Well al i can say and m sorry hat its a piss poor answer but its called a "Cold" because you catch it when its winter or in cold climates!
