Why don't female deers have horns?

This is rather like asking why women don't have beards. It is a sex marker for the species. Female deer do not fight for mates, so they don't need the horns. Losing the horns saves a lot of energy, and gives a clear signal of their sex. In some deer species, growing the horns every year takes more than half the stag's energy; the doe can pur that energy into her offspring.
