The Night Chicago Died" is a song by the British group Paper Lace, written by Peter Robin Callander and Mitch Murray. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for one week in 1974 and also reached number 3 in the UK charts. Its subject matter is a fictional gang shootout in Chicago between gangsters tied to Al Capone and the Chicago Police. The narrator retells his mother's anguish in awaiting news of the fate of her husband, a Chicago policeman.
Gangster, Al Capone's hitmen killed 5 of Bugsy Moran's gang, plus a doctor, who liked hanging out with mobsters, and the mechanic to keep the Moran gang's cars running. They were lined up against a wall and shot in the back. Two men dressed as police "led" the hitmen out of the building and into a car, thereby making the neighbors believe the police had arrested the shooters. A neighbor entered the building after the "police" had left, saw the carnage, and THEN the police were called. Altho Capone was behind it, he was in Miami, FL at the time, giving him the perfect alibi. No one was ever convicted of the massacre.
This song, by the band Paper Lace is about the gang wars between rival crime gangs that took place during prohibition in the 1930’s in Chicago.
