I think it could be either your spark plug cables or the plugs themselves. Have new ones installed, probably 60 dollars maximum. If the computer still gives the reading, check the cables. If that doesn't work, have a professional at a dealership, or your favorite mechanic take a ganter at it. Good question.

It seems odd that they would both go bad at the exact same time... although I'll check them today.

I don't know if you have a 4 banger or a v6. If it's a 4 then it could be your coil pack. I would replace the spark plugs first, then the wires, and hope that fixes the problem. If not, look at some old written off rangers and see if you can salvage a coil pack. They are solid state and usually enclosed so an old one should still be in good shape. Or you can pay the shop to buy a new one for you. In my experience they are about $150 plus labour, etc. Good luck

I know on my 92 ranger 2.3 I had to replace the fuel rail when I had a simialr problem

I found the #4 plug to be loose. It had pieces of the electrode and ceramic insullator missing. I replaced the plugs and wires and all is well.
