Black Jade. My husband likes to bring me jade if he can find it when he travels. He once brought me a necklace, which was a simple silver chain with a big heart made of black jade from Guatemala. It is by far my favorite. Here is what Mayan Black jade looks like:

Other than diamonds? Diamonds wouldn't be on my list of favorites at all. There are so many beautiful gemstones, it's hard to pick a favorite, especially since I probably have hundreds of differnt ones in supply as I make jewelry. I love the shades of garnet, including the greens, and the hues of labradorite. I think carnelian is one of my favorites. I just purchased some moonstone that's breathtaking. So hard to choose.

Actually, I never cared for diamonds to begin with... My favorite are opals -- which also happens to be my birthstone (October). I remember seeing the most extraordinary display of gemstones and minerals at the Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles when I was a child, and being awestruck by a black opal that was (at the time)about the size of my fist...

I love ammolite. It comes from a fossil of a squid-like shell fish. It is the latest of only 3 gemstones found in the past 50 years. It is extremely rare as it only can be found in Canada. It is among the three biogenic gemstones, the other two are pearls and amber.
