Perhaps the administrator changes the required point values per level. I have noticed the same annomally and I attributed it to this.

Because back in Apr-May-June the elder members of AB decided that the new version of AB made it too easy for new members to level up, compared to when they started, so a "points hump" was instated and everyone had a rediculous amount of points to level up, and a "black bag" When the "black bag" is filled, the level-ups go back to normal, supposedly evening the playing field. I was stuck on Level 37 Professor for 2.5 months.

In springtime this year the points needed for a level about doubled. Everybody kept their level, but you needed much more points to get to your next level. (About so many points as you already had.) Once you have reached the next level, you only need now about twice as many points as needed before to gain a level.
