I don't get it, can you explain what you mean by this?
-
Close enough that I ain't tellin' you my zip code.

The Zip code relates to the post office that serves the area. It could be a whole county or just a few blocks, depending on the population of the area. The four numbers after the zip code are either a route number or a post office box number, whichever is applicable.

It depends. You can easily detect the state. Beyond that, it varies. Despite the geographic derivation of most ZIP codes, the codes themselves do not represent geographic regions; they generally correspond to address groups or delivery routes. Consequently, ZIP Code "areas" can overlap, be subsets of each other, or be artificial constructs with no geographic area. Similarly, in areas without regular postal routes (rural route areas) or no mail delivery (undeveloped areas), ZIP Codes are not assigned or are based on sparse delivery routes, and hence the boundary between ZIP code areas is undefined. http://tinyurl.com/qsqsd

Like others have said, the 5 digit zip code is not accurate even down to your street. The first three numbers are a region of your state or country and then the last two narrow it down to post offices, small towns, areas within cities. Your post code sounds like it is similar to our 5 digit plus 4 zip code, which everyone has but rarely uses. The final 4 digits will narrow down your region to a city block, a group of apartments, or any other high volume mail receiver. In a small town, it can be down to just a few houses like you described with your post code. I agree that the 'What is your zip code?' question is a little too personal, but if someone is willing to answer it, that's there call. I definately wouldn't give out my nine-digit.

This isn't really an answer, but the rental house I bought last month has a zip code and an address that contain the same four numbers in the same order. The only difference between them is the zip code has a 9 in front of it.

the usa postoffice uses a nine digit zip code. the first five numbers get the letter to a central sorting post office. the next four numbers aim for a specific vicinity. maybe an office building, or an apartment building or a street. the us postal service has already assigned specific email addresses to each residence if there should be a need to switch from letter mail to email.
