The 1997 Nissan Altima has a timing chain, not a belt. This is definitely harder to change on this vehicle than a timing belt would be. The good news is that it will outlast a timing belt and therefore shouldn't need replacement for a long period of time.
some engines dont have timing belts they have timing chains and it seems like you have a timing chain cause when i went into a website to look how much it would be only timing chains came up and they really dont need to be replaced unless they just come apart and when you replace them it may be kinda tough cause you have to get the chain in just the right spot or your car wont run like it should and it can get very frustrating
