Help answer this question below.
You MUST get a flywheel puller for 2 reasons. The first is you need to remove the points and replace them, the second and most important is the main seal behind the ignition backing plate MUST be replaced after sitting that long. If you don't replace that seal you WILL blow the rod out of the engine! The puller is not expensive, they cost about $14.00 and most yamaha shops carry them. You CANNOT use a traditional 2 prong puller, you will destroy the flywheel and mushroom the end of the crankshaft. The puller screws into the flywheel backwards threads. When it is screwed all the way in you then tighten a center blot on the puller. It will pop the flywheel lose. When you set the timing you want to set the gap at .016" and set the timing at 2.2mm BTDC. You can use a simple test light to set the timing. Just gaping the points can cause you big problems. It may run and get fire but if you are to advanced you will burn a hole in the top of the piston, if it's to retarded the bike will run like the choke is on and it may backfire too. Make sure you change the condenser when you change the points too. Good luck!
