  • The use of elephants was the ancient equivalent of using a tank. They are big and can cause great destruction by ploughing through enemy lines. Their skins are thick and can repel weapons to some extent also. They were the scare machines of ancient history. Remember that few people had ever seen one in europe, let alone a cavalry comprised of many of them.
  • They used elephants because they are highly intelligent animals.
  • Hannibal used elephants mainly to awe his Roman opponents. Amazingly he was able to march them past the Alps into Italy (and a few of them actually survived the journey). Tactically, the elephants were useless. But the Romans were impressed and terrified that this new beast was brought by Hannibal from the other side of the world...
