The use of elephants was the ancient equivalent of using a tank. They are big and can cause great destruction by ploughing through enemy lines. Their skins are thick and can repel weapons to some extent also. They were the scare machines of ancient history. Remember that few people had ever seen one in europe, let alone a cavalry comprised of many of them.
