When warm starting, my 1996 Mercury Mystique 2.5L will quit as if out of gas. It takes one hour before it will restart. The fuel pump and filter appear okay. What could be wrong?

This is just a guess, but it sounds like maybe your engine is flooding. It could be that a failed temperature sensor is causing the computer to adjust the mixture to be too rich. I would check the coolant temperature sensor and any other sensors that are sensitive to temperature. Also, the Oxygen sensor is involved in adjusting the fuel mixture and a failed one often leads to a richer mixture.

Have the fuel pressure tested after it is warm. Sounds like the fuel pump is failing after running for awhile.
