  • Mainly because of the materials and process. Back in biblical times, they used natural resources to create what was around them - they didn't have synthetics. Nowadays we have chemicals and pigments and all sorts of mass-produced synthetic materials that make up dyes and such. If I remember correctly, purple dye was created by leaching the colour out of purple flowers and plants, some of which were not all that common. Their rarity and the demand for them would have created an expensive market, and so the costs of the dyes made from the materials would reflect that expense.
