This information was not easy to find but I found some interesting facts for you. Some of the most popular books at this time were: The Secret Garden (Frances Hodgson Burnett), Sons and Lovers(D.H. Lawerence), Of Human Bondage(Somerset Maugham), Wild Fire(Zane Grey),and Tarzan of the Apes (Edgar Rice Burroughs). This list was from the years 1912 and 1913, but there was a separate list published in PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY. Then, the list was dropped until 1917 when both non-fiction and fiction became more popular than ever and Mr. Britling Sees it Through (H.G.Wells) was published which was a fiction book about war. The next war books were : Over The Top (Arthur Guy Empey), and Rhymes of a Red Cross Man(Robert W. Service) which was on the best seller's list for two years. The number one fiction book of 1919 was The Four Horseman of The Apocalypse which later was made into a movie. The book sold for $1.90 because the publishers did not think the public would ever pay $2.00 for a book.

Here are some other interesting facts about the year 1914. The average salary was $750.00 a year, the life expectancy of a man was 48 years and a woman 51 years, the price of a gallon of milk was .32 cents and a gallon of whiskey cost $3.50. A 12-day cruise cost $60.00 and the divorce rate was only 1/1000.
The infamous Ziegfeld Folley's(dancing ladies) made $75.00 a week and the national debt was only 1.15 billion. A whole diffent world for sure!
