It may look like it because bunnies eat pellets that come out of the anus, but technically this is not true. Rabbits reingest their cecal pellets, not their fecal pellets. Cecal pellets are sometimes referred to as night droppings or cecotrophs. According to Rabbit Avocates, a group specializing in educating the public about the care of domestic rabbits, "These are usually produced 4-5 hours after a meal. The cecotrophs are softer than regular pellets with a stronger odor and should not be confused with actual diarrhea. Cecotrophs are a necessary part of your rabbit's diet. They contain vitamins and proteins essential to your rabbit's health." Its true for kits (baby rabbits), because when they eat their mothers' poop (its soft and contains most nutients that baby rabbits need) it prepares them for eating alfalfa cubes, pellets and/or loose hay! I know it may sound gross, but its kinda smart on the rabbits' part! Hope that helps, in some sot of way!........................

To put it simply; rabbits do not have two stomachs like cows do and need to ingest their food twice in order to get all the nutrients out of it. Sounds gross, but really is pretty efficient.

I have seen my dog eat rabbit pellets. Is she eating the cecal pellets or the fecal pellets? Can you tell the difference between the two?
