  • we failed the teachers
  • The government in the US has failed public education, which in turn has failed the funding of education and teachers, which in turn is creating a failed public school system, which in turn is creating a generation of people that don't have the basic ability to function in society, in turn will likely create a generation of people that will be apathetic about what the US was based on.
  • I agree with rigby! Public schools fail because STUDENTS and their parents have failed the teachers. Thus, the answer why public schools are failing: They have to put up with all the dysfunctional, disturbed, and discarded students who private schools DON'T want AND have the right to REJECT. To make matters worse, such children don't exactly come from wealthy families who could at least PAY the school to put up with their kid. Hey, that kind of money goes a long way in funding programs, and other learning tools. The end result is that teachers spend their day baby-sitting more than teaching students who actually want to learn. I'm one to know. My children are currently attending an urban public school system. The staff could not be more WONDERFUL and I love the school that they're in now. But my oldest did attend another and the children there belong in correctional facilities. Which is another point, sadly, public schools are having to become correctional facilities as well when students behave like inmates.
  • You have to say who "us" is. In some countries public schools work well, in others badly. If (as I guess, from the way you ignore geography) you are from the US, it is still the case that some school administrations are failing and others are not. However, it is indisputable that the US, on average, does not get value for money spent on public schools. Other countries get more education for less money.
  • Im Alec makes a GREAT point. Only in America can citizens complain about PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Which is absurd when it's the CITIZENS who have the power to make their schools better. Like I said, STUDENTS and PARENTS have every opportunity to make their schools better and safer. They blame the government but if the government did try to step in, they also complain that the government is getting too involved. Look, it's not the government bringing in guns and drugs into the school hallways. It's not the government that tells a child to destroy school property. Public schools fail because the students WANT TO FAIL. They don't want to hold any accountability over their own actions because it's another case of AMERICAN KIDS ACTING SPOILED and WORSE, they have adult parents who enable these children to act spoiled. Take for example parents in Milwaukee Public School System! But that is a whole other thread!
  • It's a vicious cycle of failure in some places. The government cuts budgets and implements laws that result in teachers being forced to teach to the test. Many parents are uninvolved with the schools. Then they students fail the test. The government then further cuts funding and parents vote against levies and bonds because the schools "aren't getting the job done". Now, they have less resources with which to work as well as angry parents to deal with and the students fail again. And around and around we go.
  • raindancer, For the record, why do public schools have to put up with children who aren't ready to be a part of society when private schools can reject them? So for the record, are you saying that children who are emotionally disturbed and an endangerment to their peers as well as to the staff should be put up with? If a child is abusive to staff members and other students, are you saying that we should just turn a blind eye? Private schools don't have to put up with children who are disrespectful so why should public schools? Why should public schools have to be both an educational institution as well as a correctional facility for juvenile delinquents? Or should I say children who belong in a juvenile correctional facility.
  • Vampyre Bat, I hear ya! It's the parents I tell ya. They think their children are too precious even if they are raising a monster. It's really too bad that other parents and their children have to suffer because ONE parent is unwilling to admit that maybe their little angel is the culprit. Like I said, my kids attend an inner city school because we have no choice at the moment. The staff is great but there have been many parents who pulled their children out because they feel the staff is too militant. But while they say that, it's no secret these are parents of the same kids who have led a disastrous trail at every school they've been to. We can sit here and blame the public school system but when will the parents take responsibility? When a kid is expelled from more than two schools, it's time to look at the kid and his/her home life. Really, do private schools have to put up with this too?
