The signals obtained from neutrinos are extremely weak. Neutrino detectors are constructed deep below the surface of the earth to block cosmic rays that would otherwise make it impossible to study them. The neutrinos pass through the earth, but other forms of radiation from the sun are blocked. For example, the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) was built 6800 feet underground in an INCO mine in Sudbury, Ontario, and is being operated by Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario.
