Why does Maslow put "sexual needs" as physiological needs when many people could live without sex, but could never survive without water, food or air (other MORE physiological needs)? Shouldn't sex be included in needs of love and affection instead?

he argues the case by saying that for the human race to survive we have sexual needs... without them you and i would not be here - henceforth it is in physiological needs.... i question his reasoning too.. but what can we do about it???

well if it wasnt for sex we all would have died out long ago, so in that sense it would be under physioligical. but as the survival of the individual i think that would make a great thesis and i would like to read that some day.

sex is a personal need, though. almost just as much as water, food and air. ...sure, you can argue that we can live without it. But we wouldn't be as sane. Sex and love basically go hand in hand, and humans need love.

Umm like, it centers more on the concepts of "motivations" and what it means "to survive", not "to live." Ummmmm… like uhhh… I don't know about you but the average life span of human beings is around 70 years. So like, umm, if nobody has sex, then the likelihood of the human race surviving past another 100 years or so is what scientists might call exceptionally minimal. So from the human race's point of view, it might actually be just a little bit fair to say that Maslow was on to something. On a micro level, at least so far as you're concerned, should you not want your lineage to survive, you have every right to opt out (of course your question hints towards that decision already having been made for you, not according to Maslow's theories but those of a different chap named Darwin). As for a fair lot of the rest of us, our sex drives have been appropriately wired via the ages to encourage us to support the initiative to survive. Should you happen to know of or discover an alternative means of maintaining our survival, please keep it to yourself as I'm quite sure the experience would pale in comparison to the current method.

Food, sleep and sexual urge are basic instincts built into the genes of all living beings. Only humans can resist against sexual urge to some extent. Those who are living without sex must have experienced the same some time in life. What is held in secrecy can not be generalized. Should there be an opportunity to have sex, how many of them will resist? Only philosophers with unworldly look can resist that. In Hinduism, developing that attitude is the starting point for in the philosophical journey in the quest for higher knowledge. He who looses his grip once gets disqualified.
