Hiking or backpacking? If you're just going our for a day hike bring a little first aid kit, a map and a compass, a lighter, a knife. You might want to also bring an extra layer of clothes. And water. Some snacks. These days, I always bring an extra diaper and a change of clothes for my kids. :-)

YOUR QUESTION: What should i bring if im going hiking ANSWER: You never said what kind of hiking you are doing, where, and for how long. This answer, hopefully, covers all situations. If you are going hiking you should wear any clothing that is not cotton. Cotton retains cold, and even if if it is not cold when you begin, by the end of the day, it can turn very icy cold. So, if summer, wear tshirt and shorts or long pants but carry a fleece top and an emergency blanket and a first aid kit. If you are camping out, you can carry a biker's tent, that is very small, portable and very easy to set up. Wear comfortable shoes and good thick socks. Hiking sticks always help. Even if you feel you do not need one, it is a proven fact that using hiking sticks relieves 20,000 pounds of pressure off the knees. Now I have no clue how that happens, I just know that is a fact. If this is your first hike, you might be best to go to a state park and hike on a simple marked trail. These trails are fun and they are almost impossible to get lost on. Just get the map and pay attention. Best kinds of hikes? Check out Outward Bound School, go to the website http://www.ncobs.org Other things you will need on your hike, water, or a place to get water from, water-purification tablets (for long hikes), canteen or water bottle, matches, compass, maps, cellular phone and or gps system, foldable, pocketsize tarp (for emergencies), rain poncho. Take a buddy along, especially on your first, long hike. PRECAUTIONS: Tell someone exactly where you are going and when you should be returning. This way, if anything does happen, or if you get lost, someone will know that you are missing. Take an emergency paper with you that has all your emergency contact telephone numbers on it. If you are hiking in winter, fall or late at night, never wear jeans. Many times when "lost" hikers died, they died due to the temperature. They could not keep warm. By not using jeans and by wearing fleece or other man-made materials, you could be saving your life in an emergency. Most times, they went out for a day hike, in an unknown area, and then wound up lost. The temperature dropped, and that was it for them, all due to cotton or jeans. Believe it no not, the type of clothing you wear, can mean the difference between life and death on a cold-winter hike. For your best experience, do your first and second long hikes with buddies, and with people who are experienced in hiking.
