Buying a new battery will solve your problem immediately. Depending on the kind of battery your laptop uses (likely Lithium Ion but not necessarily), you should Google 'how to maintain battery life' or something similar to learn about how to help your battery last longer (I listed one such site below). It sounds like you need a new battery. I replace mine every year. If it was less than this, ask the manufacturer. Some warranty it for 1 year, others only 90 days.

If you have upgraded from XP to Vista this is being caused by Vista's Aero theme.
