  • It can be a shock to your system if you are not used to being just another student among the thousands of others. It can also be an isolating experience for the individual and he or she may lose their bearings in the new environment. I went from a secondary school class size of 20 (60 total in the final year) to a university with a population of about 18,000 students. The first year of the program in which I was registered had about 250 students. The smallest class I attended was far larger than any I had ever attended before. Going to a lecture hall filled with over 400 students is a far cry from a class of 20. I was 16 at the time and did not adapt well. Too many options, too little structure. I dropped out in my second year, but eventually completed my post-secondary education a decade later.
