yes you need potatoes, yes french fries are made from potatoes but french fries are deep fried in oil and fat. thats what makes them unhealthy. not the potato itself, just what it is cooked in.

Complex carbs - those that come from whole grains - are necessary building block for energy. Starchy foods like french fries and cause wider swings in your blood sugar and their lack of fiber along with the way in which they are cooked kind of outweigh their benefit.

The grease they are fried in is bad for you. If you eat potatoes prepared in other healthier ways like mashed or baked, you would get the benefit from them.

Sure, baked not fried...

Yes, french fries are bad for you. Depending on you, even plain baked potatoes (with NO toppings) can be bad for you, i.e. if you are diabetic. Potatoes supply calories primarily. Although they contain some trace nutrition, you can generally get better sources elsewhere. If you are training for a marathon, pile on potatoes (not french fries).

When starchy items are cooked at high heat (as in frying potatoes) there is a chemical reaction that creates a carcinogen..I've forgotten the name of it. So if you must have your fries, eat them very very rarely.

One potato has 100 calories 3 grams of fiber No fat No Sodium More potassium than a banana and more vitamin C than both apples and bananas. So, no contrary to popular belief that they are all carbs and no fiber and have little nutritional value, they are acutally fairly healthy. They are, however, not healthy fried.
