After the horrors of 9/11 Late Show was the first late night talk show to return to the air, and Dave gave an amazing speech about the horrors and aftermath that, helped to make it OK to laugh again. Dan Rather was the guest that evening, and the two talked policy and tragedy. They both broke down in tears. In the initial weeks and months after the attacks the mood on late-night television remained somber. Critics hailed David Letterman's first show after the tragedy when the visibly shaken host paid tribute to police officers, firefighters, and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in a heartfelt speech.
